In most developed countries, mediation and negotiation as parts of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) has been used to resolve a wide range of disputes without going to court. They offer an alternative to destructive confrontation, prolonged litigation and violence both at home and in the workplace. Mediation and negotiation skills as parts of Conflict Management, no doubt, make conflict resolution faster and cheaper within families, communities, schools, workplace and even commercial and public disputes. conflict and peace studies is an area of social science that analyzes violent and non-violent behavior and the structural mechanisms that lead to conflict with the goal of using this understanding to promote peace and a healthy human condition. Professionals in Peace and Conflict management may work in a variety of areas including international criminal courts or tribunals, civil-military operations, community based restorative justice, human rights protection and monitoring, local peace building training, nuclear and small arms proliferation and other higher level positions in labour relations, mediation, arbitration or contract negotiation and many more. Conflict management skills are necessary for any so-called "civilized" society. There is therefore compelling need for administrators, leaders, directors, lawyers and other judicial officers and indeed EVERYBODY to acquire good conflict management skills-good communication and interpersonal skills for building and sustaining relationships, for enhanced team work, better public image and increased productivity.

CCPPA MEMBERSHIP

The Centre for Crisis Prevention and Peace Advocacy (CCPPA) is  a professional membership body with members across the country authorized to regulate the training and practice of professional conflict management in Nigeria. Membership is open to all as well as been authorized by the membership grades. Members also receive a journal (The Peace Advocate), with up-to-date conflict management news, information and issues from across the globe. There are six membership grades which are granted according to applicant’s qualifications. For graduates who have completed a HND, Bachelor, Masters or PHD Programme in Peace and Conflict studies and other social science courses are eligible for professional membership based on related work experience.

The recommended qualifying scheme for CCPPA membership is the CCPPA qualifying scheme. Membership is gained by completing a recognized programme of study approved by the council such as Bsc, BA, LLB, MBBS, HND, PGD, MBA, MPA, Msc, PHD in Peace and Conflict Studies, or mediation & Negotiation, Social Sciences OR professional qualifications from accredited bodies. Graduates in other disciplines other the ones mentioned above can also be considered based on relevant years of working experience. 

The membership grades are open to: Diplomats, Military Personnel, Lawyers, Human Resource Officers/Directors, Executives Officers, Judges/Magistrates, Traditional/Religions/Political leaders, company secretaries/legal advisers, chief registrars, law makers, council managers, NGO/IGO Officials, law enforcement officers, special Advisers, conflict management consultants, labour union executives, opinion leaders, entrepreneurs, pastors, proprietors, and members of other segments of the society.
