SEMINAR ON "EFFECTIVE CONFLICT MEDIATION AND NEGOTIATION SKILLS"

CENTRE FOR CRISIS PREVENTION AND PEACE ADVOCACY (CCPPA)
MANDATORY CONTINUOUS MEMBERSHIP EDUCATION TRAINING (MCOMET)
ON
“EFFECTIVE CONFLICT MEDIATION AND NEGOTIATION SKILLS”
OVERVIEW
Research has shown that people favour mediation and negotiation to settle disputes instead of litigation because of how the processes work. In mediation for example, parties rely on help of a neutral “mediator” to facilitate constructive communication leading to voluntary agreement by both parties. Decision making rests with the parties themselves. An outstanding benefit of mediation is that, parties get empowered by learning how to improve their conflict resolution and communication skills making it possible for parties to solve problems on their own whenever dispute arises.

In most developed countries, mediation and negotiation as parts of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) has been used to resolve a wide range of disputes without going to court. They offer an alternative to destructive confrontation, prolonged litigation and violence both at home and in the workplace. Mediation and negotiation skills, no doubt, make conflict resolution faster and cheaper within families, communities, schools, workplace and even commercial and public disputes.

More than just a training seminar, this programme contains resources for changing the norms that so often cause obstructive behavior and replacing them with constructive, positive behavior. The core element in the CCPPA training system puts the tools of the professional mediator and negotiator in the hands of every participants/employee to build better relationships whether at home or in the workplace. This is an essential component of every successful organization’s human resource development and organizational development strategic effort. Thousands of people have learned this practical tool for the prevention and early resolution of conflict in any dispute situation.

ORGANISATIONAL BACKGROUND

The Centre for Crisis Prevention and Peace Advocacy (CCPPA) was established in 2009. It was known first as the Centre for Crisis and Preventive Diplomacy (CCPD). The impetus for establishing the organization stemmed from recognition of the high rate and intractable nature of contemporary conflict formations in Nigeria as well as the global events and human experiences in general which have given the quest for peace a new urgency.

CCPPA was legally registered on the 20th day of April 2012 as the Centre for Crisis Prevention and Peace Advocacy (CCPPA) with registration number CAC/IT/No.52029 according to the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The founders of CCPPA believe that a strong and organized platform would help support collaborative peace building for conflict transformation, create a civilization of peace and promote the development of conflict management education in Nigeria and beyond.

CCPPA plays a major role in developing and disseminating innovative approaches to negotiation and conflict management, including collaboration between conflict resolution organizations and organizations in the field of democratization, human rights, security and economic reconstruction. CCPPA’s mission is to positively touch the lives of all concerned, acting as conflict management practitioners, providing education as well as preventive and corrective responses to violence and realizing the agenda for peace.

CCPPA is based in Kaduna State of Nigeria with a number of six(6) full time and two(2) part time employees in addition to a couple of Volunteers. CCPPA covers mainly the Northern Part of Nigeria and other Conflict zones in South-South Nigeria. For more information, please visit www.ccppa.org.ng
